South Africa Set to Modernise Travel with New ETA System Launching September 2025

In a major move to boost tourism and streamline border control, the South African government has announced the official launch of its new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, slated to go live on September 25, 2025.

This digital system is designed to simplify the entry process for many international visitors, replacing the need for traditional and eVisa applications for short-term stays.

The initiative aims to reduce administrative burdens, decrease wait times at embassies, and make South Africa a more accessible destination for tourists and business travellers alike.

 Cape Town, South Africa

What is the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)?

The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is an online permit valid for 90 days. Applicants simply apply and pay online with a credit or debit card to receive their approved ETA via email.

The permit is valid for short-term tourism, business, conferences, and visiting friends or family.

How the New System Will Work?

The process is designed for convenience and efficiency. Once the ETA is approved and emailed to the traveller, it is digitally linked to their passport. Upon arrival in South Africa, immigration officials will simply scan the traveller's passport to verify the valid ETA, expediting clearance and helping to alleviate congestion at international airports and land borders.

The full list of nationalities eligible to apply for the ETA will be officially released on the launch date.

Critical Passport Requirements for Applicants

All travellers intending to use the eTA system must ensure their passport meets specific criteria. The passport must:

  • Be valid for a minimum of 30 days after the intended date of departure from South Africa
  • Contain at least 2 unused, blank pages for entry and exit stamps

Failure to meet these requirements could result in a denied application or refusal of entry upon arrival

Important Information for Arriving Passengers

In addition to the new ETA, travellers should be aware of other procedures at the border:

  • Biometrics: You may be required to provide fingerprints and a photo upon arrival
  • e-Gates: Major airports are using self-service e-gates with facial recognition for quicker immigration clearance
  • Travel with Minors: Always verify the specific requirements for children before travelling, as rules can differ

A Step towards Bright Future

With the implementation of the ETA system, South Africa will join nations like Kenya, Turkey, and EU member states that have adopted comparable digital travel authorisations, bringing it into line with international travel trends.

It is anticipated that this action will greatly expand the country's travel and tourism industry. From the vibrant city of Cape Town to the amazing wildlife of Kruger National Park, South Africa streamlines the travel experience so that tourists may concentrate on its well-known attractions.
